Progress continues on Georgia State University's new football practice field on MLK Drive, not far from Six Feet Under -- Grant Park. Where Does Agnes Live?Agnes Dunbar, P.C. (Preservation Cat) is very proud of her home, one of only four historic antebellum houses left in Atlanta. The two-foot wide walls of the once-grand home have withstood war, fire and neglect to serve as a reminder of Atlanta’s history from the 1850s to today. A Frothy Tale of Atlanta's First AleWe’re not “Milwaukee on the Chattahoochee” but Atlanta was once home to a proud beer-brewing tradition. As you would expect from a region with a conservative Protestant culture, the South has never been the nation’s beer-brewing epicenter. Of the few local breweries that existed, only one survived through the turn of the last century and Prohibition. That brewery was the Atlantic Company. Its tasty suds? Atlantic Beer. Armies Clash! Cannons Fire!Cyclorama Is Still a Must-See War. Drama. Miniature fighting men. Atlanta’s Cyclorama is not to be missed. Since it first opened in 1893, the storied Cyclorama has been one of Atlanta’s most famous spots. Located in the heart of historic Grant Park, the exhibit lets visitors step back into time to witness the Battle of Atlanta. Let It Flow! Saving Grant Park's FountainsAfter years of neglect and decay, a movement is afoot to restore two historic Grant Park fountains. The effort should mean that these revitalized water features will again inspire park-goers. The Grant Park Conservancy conducted a study for the restoration of two neglected fountains. The study was funded through a $10,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Human Resources and funds raised by the Grant Park Conservancy. The Enchantment of OaklandCity fathers purchased six acres in 1850 to be a public burial ground for a young but fast-growing town that already had a population of more than 2,500. It was designed as a rural garden cemetery, a 19th-Century innovation conceived as an alternative to traditional graveyards which often were crowded and aesthetically unappealing. Oakland Cemetery's Adopt-a-Plot ProgramSix Feet Under proudly participates in historic Oakland Cemetery’s "Adopt-a-Plot" program. Under the program, neglected burial plots are "adopted" for cleaning and landscaping by volunteers. Georgia State UniversityGeorgia State University, founded in 1913, has a mission of excellence in teaching, research and service. Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, this major research university has an enrollment of more than 27,000 undergraduate and graduate students in six colleges. Georgia State is the second-largest university in the state, with students coming from every county in Georgia, every state in the nation and from over 145 countries. Our Guy: Cornelius Hanleiter, Early Atlanta Seafood ConnoisseurCornelius Hanleiter did it all: printer, publisher, telegraph operator, soldier, politician, and first-rate socialite. This Atlanta pioneer shaped the city’s history from its earliest days up to his 1897 death. One Beer Fir You, One Beer Fir MeThe SweetWater Brewing Company opened its doors in Atlanta in 1997. Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney, two roommates from the University of Colorado, had a dream: to bring their west-coast-style beer to the southeast. Seven years later, the SweetWater brew company offers tasty ales, and arguably one of the best tours available in the city of Atlanta. Zoo Atlanta: Fun for All AgesIf you're dreaming of the exotic landscapes of the four corners of the world and the countless species of remarkable creatures that inhabit those wild places, you may be surprised to find that your landing place is right around the corner.
